From being in counseling, I've learned a few things, one of them being when you start progressing and making a positive change, Satan does everything he can to attack you because he doesn't want you to have power over your life...or at least he doesn't want you to think you have power over your life. Satan usually attacks our outsides as a means to get to our insides, who we are. Being a woman, I feel most attacked regarding my appearance. The way I look, how I dress, the color of my hair, my height, etc. The world sets up a "model" of what women "should look like" but that image is all wrong. The images they give us are images that the people who are in them don't even live up to, yet we strive to look like them because we think the world will accept us. This is Satan's plan. He sees how we respond to negative comments from the world and does everything he can to attack us with our appearance. He tells us we're not pretty, that no one could ever be attracted to us, and he points out our "problem" areas or those that he makes us think are problem areas. But I know the God I serve! He is a God who has created me out of His own image. I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I know that he formed me in the womb. I know that I am the apple of His eye.
We talk a lot about putting up our shield in the battle against the enemy, but we don't think about the shield that God has given us that is protecting who we are. You see, I said earlier that Satan tries to attack us from the outside as a means to get inside. He ultimately wants us to feel unworthy and undeserving of all that Christ has done for us and has given to us. Today, when talking with my counselor about this issue of shields and Satan attacking our appearance, the thought came to me: just think what it would be like if we didn't have our outer body, our physical bodies. Satan would go straight for our Identity. I realize that when we are without our physical body, we will already be in Heaven rejoicing and singing praises to the Lord and won't have to worry about any attacks then, but what about now. Our body is God's gift to us, especially as women, to protect the enemy from getting to our identity. Our body provides layers which makes it harder for him to overtake us. In any battle, you'll find layers upon layers of men fighting to keep the enemy from reaching their base and winning the battle...our bodies are those layers of men, protecting who we are from being taken over by Satan.
So instead of listening to the lies of the devil about how we're not pretty enough or we're not appealing to the eye, we need to listen to the voice of the Lord and concentrate on the gift he has given us...our body.
"So God created man in his own image, in his image he created them, male and female he created them." Genesis 1:27
"The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and my horn of salvation, my stronghold." Psalm 18:2
